HOW TO HEAL YOUR NEW PIERCING

AFTERCARE

We at Borderline recommend you clean your piercing with our Micro Shield anti-microbial germicidal medicated soap solution. Alternatively – it is advised you use a fragrance/perfume/chemical-free natural anti-bacterial soap/liquid or a non-iodized organic sea salt or rock salt. These solutions should only be used liberally and not to excess.

It is paramount that your new piercing/piercings should only ever be cleaned/handled with clean hands. Once your hands are washed with anti-bacterial hand wash, commence cleaning your new piercing with the Micro Shield soap. This should be used twice daily, after a shower in the morning and before bed at night. Apply diluted (with distilled or purified water) liberally to the new piercing site using cotton-tips. Twirling the cotton-tip away from the pierced area - helping remove any built-up bacteria. Do not clean more than twice daily as this can irritate and aggravate your fresh piercing and leave a red rash around the pierced area.

Non-iodized organic sea salt solution soaks should be exercised once every two days to accelerate the healing process. Sea saltwater soaks are strongly suggested at least once a day to accelerate the healing process. A sea salt solution for a soak is made up of 1/4 teaspoon of organic non-iodized sea salt into 1 cup of boiled water, allowing for the water to cool down. Do not make the solution stronger with the intention that it will be better for your piercing, it’s not. A stronger solution is not better as you can burn your piercing with too much salt. Soak the pierced area for a few minutes (this can either be done with a shot glass like effect, or a cotton ball). Rinse with distilled water and pat dry with disposable paper towel. Cotton towels or clothes are not suitable as they harbour bacteria.

Hydrogen peroxide, methylated spirits, Dettol, tea-tree oil, alcohol swabs and other harsh products should NOT be used as everyday aftercare on fresh piercings – if at all. They are too harsh and will burn, irritate, inflame and dry your piercing out excessively and hinder the healing process. New piercings should be treated with extreme care and caution.

HEALING

The overall healing process is enhanced with a well-balanced diet, adequate sleep and if needed a vitamin and mineral supplement (vitamin C 500-1000mg and chelated zinc 50-150mg per day, after food). Vitamin C, Chelated Zinc and Echinacea liquid extract may be useful for the first 12 weeks of the healing process. They will boost the immune system and aid connective tissues to heal. Excessive alcohol, aspirin and caffeine should be avoided.

If granulated tissue begins to grow around your piercing (looks similar to keloid scarring) consult one of your Borderline Piercers on how to treat this.

It is recommended that you visit your Borderline Piercer for body jewellery changes. 316L or 316LVM are the only acceptable grades of Stainless Steel. Niobiums, Titanium, Lucite and Gold or Monofilament Nylon are our recommendations for the correct body jewellery for your piercing.

Other metals such as sterling silver or low grade steels are NOT appropriate for body piercing as they will cause infection and aggravate a new or healed piercing due to the amount of nickel in the metal.

THANK YOU FOR CHOSING BORDERLINE TATTOO’S.

HAPPY HEALING!
